Afro-Latin and Dominican Culture Total Immersion Program
Objectives:
To show how evolving academic perception of Afro-Latin Culture changes the political intellectual approach to race, class, identity, nationalism, popular movements, economical development and religion.
Summer 2009
(Santo Domingo)
Day 1 : -- Home Institution to Santo Domingo; welcoming reception
Day 2 -- Orientation; Local Visits to Colmados
Day 3 -- Field Study Boca Chica
Day 3 -- Shameless buying, selling and bartering Dominican style -- Field Study of Mercado Modelo, China Town, el Conde;
Day 4 – Dominican History and Culture; Lecture Tour
Day 5 -- Selling and Consuming America's 'Good Life' -- Dominican approaches to Pizza Hut, McD, BK, KFC, et al
Day 6 –U.S. perspectives: Centro Franklin; field study of national museums; visit class at PUCMM Recinto
Day 7 -- Travel to/from Santiago; tour of agencies; site visit to Centro Leon; tour of PUCMM
Day 8 -- Agency visits
Day 9 -- Field study of malls, superstores; site visits to cultural locations and museums of other nation-states
Day 10-- Beyond subsistence and sufficiency: field study Juan Dolio, Bayahibe (or elsewhere)
Day 11 -- Lecture/tour of Media Stations in Santo Domingo;
Day 12 -- Tours and agency site visits
Day 13 -- Team Presentations
Day 14 -- Depart Santo Domingo -- return to Home Institution

How it will be accomplished:
By traveling throughout the Dominican Republic, visiting cultural, historical and natural sites, students will obtain a comprehensive vision of the cultural and social context of Afro/Latin America today.
